WINZIP

ZIPPING AND UNZIPPING FILES

WinZip is a program that compresses files (makes them smaller) and makes for a shorter upload and download time when e-mailing. Some people also use it to make files small enough to place onto a disk so that they can delete programs that are not used very often on their hard drive and make more room for programs that are needed.

We start at the WinZip website
WinZip Download Evaluation Page and choose the Link towards the bottom of the page for Win95. This download takes about 5 minutes . Download it it to the directory of your choice (most people use a directory called "Download". Close your browser and go to your to my Download directory (You have to be in windows Explorer, this will not work in AOL) and find the file named WinZip.

This installation is fast and easy ... and you can do it while you are still online!
You need to click using the RIGHT
mouse button (not the left) as AOL will not open the program. Click with the RIGHT mouse button and choose OPEN. You will need to decide where you wish the program to be located on your hard drive ... the default setting is C:\programs\winzip and unless you chose different. This is where the installation program will place it.

The installation gives you a choice ... the WinZip wizard and the classic version ... you will still be able to change your choice later if you make the wrong one at this time. I chose the classic version
.

The program installs itself and you are done ... it will place an icon in the programs menu ... this means that when you click the start button ... you will see the WinZip icon right there! The icon looks like a vise grip with a file cabinet in it.

To open the program all you need to do is click on the icon and a box will open up (this is called the "Nag Screen"), as we have not paid for the program yet it will ask us if we care to register the program ... and such ... just click I AGREE to get past this and into the program ... another box will pop up with several choices ... now the fun begins.

TO MAKE A ZIP FILE:

Let's say that you have several friends who send wavs back and forth and you get tired of sending one at a time ... you can make a zip file with several wavs. By clicking the box that says NEW. Once you click on NEW ... another box will pop up that asks where you wish the zip file to be placed. (Just click up top and choose the file you wish to place the zip in). You can put this zip file in any folder you wish ... for this example I am going to place it in my AOL download file.

Then another box will pop up and you will need to find the file that has all your wavs in it ... you can chose one or several at a time. To chose one at a time just highlight the wav you want and then click the box that says ADD and it places it in the zip file for you. To add another wav to the file just click the box that says ADD at the top of the WinZip box and it will take you back to your wavs files ... highlight another and click on ADD again...

You can add several wavs at a time if they are listed together by holding your mouse button down on the first wave and then holding down the shift key ... while holding the shift key, let go of the mouse key and click to the last wav you wish to add and while holding the mouse button down you can let go of the shift key and then let go of the mouse ... now you have several wavs highlighted and you can just click the ADD button and it will add all those wavs to the zip file.

Now we have our wavs in the zip file and we want to close the new file ... just go to the top of the WinZip box (on the left) and click on the FILE option ... choose the CLOSE ARCHIVE and the file is zipped and ready to send ... attach it to mail just like any other file.

TO OPEN A ZIP FILE

Ok, your wav buddy sent you a zip file full of wavs and you need to open it ... you can open it one of two ways. The easiest way is to open your windows explorer (click the start button, go to programs and click on windows explorer) find the zip file and just double click on it ... once again the NAG SCREEN will pop up and you just click I AGREE and the WinZip box will open and you will see all the wavs.

TO EXTRACT FILES FROM A ZIP FILE

Your friend sent you 20 wavs, and you don't have any of them ... you want to extract them all into your wav file. Just click the extract button and it will ask where you wish the wavs to go ... find your wav file and make sure ALL FILES is checked and click on the EXTRACT button and POOF there they are in your wav file!!!

Now let us say that out of the 20 wavs. You already have 10 of them ... so you only want to extract the 10 you don't have ... highlight the wavs you want ... one at a time or in a block (like we did before), make sure the
SELECTED FILE is checked and click on extract ... now you only have the wavs you want.

You can then delete the zip file unless of course you wish to save it.

The program has many options, but until you get used to it I suggest leaving the options set on the default settings. Once you know your program you can customize it to your own preferences.

WinZip can be used to send wavs, exe programs or just about anything. Please keep in mind that the more files you place in it, the longer your upload or download will be even when compressed.

PLEASE NOTE: The WinZip program also has a wonderful tutorial under the HELP option. Check it out.
